About Hypnosis

What is Hypnosis?

There are a variety of ways to describe this natural state of mind. First of all, hypnosis is not a sleep state even though a person in hypnosis may appear to be sleeping. Hypnosis is simply a state of deep relaxation and intense mental focus. It is a normal and natural state of selective attention that people experience spontaneously. It is induced normally in everyday living much more often than it is induced artificially. For example, every time we become engrossed in a good movie we are in the equivalent of a natural hypnotic trance. Other everyday examples of hypnotic states include:

  • Arriving home after driving for a long time and realizing that you have no recollection of the drive.Gazing into a fire, feeling comfortable and relaxed and your mind is wandering.
  • Becoming absorbed while reading a novel, forgetting about the room around you or the passage of time.
  • Daydreaming or thinking about things far away from you to the point where your surroundings fade into the background.
  • Being caught up in a video game to the point where you lose track of the passage of time.

Research shows that a person experiencing hypnosis slows down his or her brain waves from BETA into ALPHA and sometimes even THETA, which is identical to the experience a person has every night as they drift of to sleep.

Hypnosis is a safe process with a history of serious study extending back over 200 years. The American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association approved hypnosis as a treatment modality in 1958, as did the British Medical Association, and hypnosis has since become a widely accepted modality for helping people make deep and permanent personal changes. Effective hypnotherapy is oriented to solutions. Each person has generative resources; however, we sometimes may not have conscious access to those needed resources. When used skillfully and appropriately, hypnotic trance gives a person access to those unconscious resources. Hypnotherapy relaxes an individual’s failing, habitual conscious response to a particular problem or behavior, allowing the generative portions of a person's unconscious mind to fully experience, evaluate, and utilize appropriate suggestions and images. This gives a person full access to the resources they need, which stimulates significant personal changes, aiding people in achieving their goals.

Once the normal misconceptions a person may have are cleared away, anyone even remotely close to average intelligence can go into a state of hypnosis. Unfortunately, because of needless fears and misconceptions, some people have been reluctant to contemplate hypnotherapy in the past. Some have believed the therapist can control them, learn deep, dark hidden secrets, or make them do foolish or ridiculous things. These fears and misconceptions (which are often fed by watching stage hypnotists) are without merit. During hypnotherapy a person is always in complete control and will normally remember most or all of the session; in fact, many clients report a heightened sense of awareness as all their senses become much more acute in a hypnotic state than at any other time, making them aware of everything happening around them, even if their eyes are closed. Even in the deepest states of hypnosis, there is always a part of a person’s mind that remains aware of everything that is happening, and their values always remain intact. A person will never do anything in hypnosis that they would not do in a normal waking state. If anyone were to try to give you suggestions against your moral or religious beliefs, you would immediately emerge from hypnosis, and when they are in a hypnotic state, if a person were not roused, they would naturally emerge at their own pace.
